Fire Hydrant and Valve Protection Policy

Purpose
To protect the City water distribution system from: - Contamination due to unprotected connection to City maintained hydrants. - Unauthorized operation of City maintained hydrants and valves. - Unauthorized taking of municipal water from City maintained hydrants. - Damage to hydrants, valves or the water distribution system due to use or abuse of City maintained hydrants and valves.


Policy Statement
1. Only authorized City personnel of the Department of Public Works and Parks, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department or persons specifically assigned by the City are permitted to operate City maintained hydrants and valves.
2. Any authorized person or company operating a City hydrant or valve is liable for a fine of $5,000 or other amount as set by the City from time to time.
