Request for Mechanical Repairs

Purpose
To outline procedures for requiring the services of the Mechanical Division.


Background
This POG is intended to provide clarification on the proper procedures when requiring any services from the Mechanical Division (i.e., breakdowns, accidents involving Departmental vehicles, requirements for towing services, etc.) This replaces POG #05-01-01, “Request for Mechanical Repairs”, dated 2012/05/29.


Policy Statement
1. The OIC of the vehicle shall:

a. Notify the 911 Communication Centre immediately that the vehicle is 10-16 and another vehicle will be dispatched to the incident in its place or be dispatched when an incident occurs.

b. Notify the on duty Platoon Chief who will be responsible to notify the Manager of Mechanical Services and 911 Communications Center to discuss alternate vehicle dispatching.

c. Ensure that the vehicle is positioned in a manner which will not cause a hazard to the general public. Traffic cones and vehicle lighting shall be deployed to warn traffic of the disabled vehicle.

2. Should personnel be redeployed, at least one (1) person (operator/driver) shall remain with the vehicle until arrival of Mechanical personnel, or otherwise directed by the Platoon Chief.

3. Based upon the findings of Mechanical staff, a person will either wait for repairs to be made on-site, or in consultation with the Platoon Chief, arrange for transportation to a replacement vehicle.

All Other Requests for Mechanical Services


4. When the Mechanical Division’s services are required for any reason, the OIC of the vehicle shall notify the on duty Platoon Chief immediately.

5. The Platoon Chief shall contact the Manager of Mechanical Services and determine appropriate action.

6. Should a vehicle be required to be taken out of service and it affects response coverage, the Platoon Chief shall notify the 911 Communications Center, the Deputy Chief of Operations from 9 am to 4:30 pm and Chief Officer after 4:30 pm.

7. If the Platoon Chief is unable to contact the Manager of Mechanical Services and the vehicle is unable to be left in service, they shall change the vehicle out with a spare vehicle.

8. If a vehicle has to be towed due to mechanical failure, the Manager of Mechanical Services or Platoon Chief will contact the following companies for towing services:

9. Vehicles are only to be taken out of service on the authorization of the Manager of Mechanical Services, Platoon Chief or Chief Officer.

10. Any time a vehicle is removed from service in Goulds Station, the Manager of Mechanical Services or Platoon Chief shall notify the Chief of Goulds Volunteers.
